Population Growth and Rapid Urbanization
Transportation systems interact with other critical urban infrastructure systems and play a unique role in providing passenger and freight mobility (e.g., for delivering water, power, and food). This thrust area will:
(i) Address sustainability and resilience challenges associated with the coupled evolution of livable human communities and food-water-energy-mobility service infrastructure under long-term stresses and short-term disruptions;
(ii) Examine emerging technology-enabled opportunities for the transportation and logistics industry, such as those related to autonomous and connected transportation, shared mobility, and vehicle electrification, and evaluate their measurable social, economic, and environmental impacts.
