Aging Infrastructure in United States
The interaction between humans and built infrastructure are intrinsic to large urban environments. Emphasis will be placed on the use of mechanics, materials, structures, and built infrastructure systems (including green infrastructure such as vertical farming, green roofs, etc.) that improve resilience in cities as livable environments. This thrust area will:
(i) Facilitate the development of energy-efficient structures and materials that can be utilized by overloaded urban transportation systems;
(ii) Design high-rise buildings capable of reducing their demand on the infrastructure system by harnessing energy to support building functions, while simultaneously improving their resilience against external threats.
This thrust will also support prediction, monitoring, assessment, and retrofit strategies to make critical civil infrastructure functional under extreme events.
